Discovery to launch new series, World Birthday 2003

This year, Discovery Channel commemorates Mother's Day around the world with the premiere of World Birthday 2003 on Sunday, May 11 from 7.00 to 10.00 pm. The repeats would be shown on Monday, May 12, from 1.00 to 4.00 am and Saturday, May 17, from 3.00 to 6.00 pm.

World Birthday gives viewers a glimpse into the unique traditions and preparations surrounding the birth of a child, the infant's first day of life and how universally, the new entrant changes the lives of parents and family members. This two-hour special spans 18 time zones to capture families sharing the common experience of childbirth in eight countries across five continents - India, Afghanistan, Argentina, Japan, Northern Ireland, Russia, South Africa and USA - on the same day.

In India, the Discovery Channel team visited Ritu and her husband Ramesh in Mumbai. The couple was over anxious, as Ritu had miscarried twice before. The doctors had scheduled a caesarean for the expecting mother, which would have set the family back by a month###SQ###s salary. Post a successful operation, an elated Ramesh had to drag himself away from his newborn son to go to work.

Besides India, World Birthday portrays families from diverse ethnic, cultural, political and economic backgrounds and contrasts the different preparations and emotions experienced by mothers before, during and after giving birth, providing viewers with a glimpse into how the first day of life begins in different parts of the world.
