Remembering Suresh Mullick

I have always thought of Suresh as the perfect picture of a real creative all rounder. Whenever people discussed great cerative minds of our country, Suresh came to mind and I suppose he always will ... to me. I worked on my first real campaign with him. It was for GE. Great fun we had ... he even "sang out" the brief. Remarkable man. We will all miss him but never forget him.

As an editor with Kailash, I have the most pleasant memories editing The Freedom Torch and Mile Sur Mera Tumhara with my dear Suresh.

 Dear Mrs Mullick,

It was with deep regret and sadness that I learnt of Suresh's passing on to what, I have no doubt, is a better world. Suresh was never really the same after he lost his father; that emotional loss was more than he could take.

I will always remember Suresh fondly for we genuinely liked each other, not just because we were colleagues, but as human beings. We respected each other, and were honest to each other. His professional judgement always proved me wrong when I went contrary to his creative recommendation. He had much to give, and he gave freely and liberally like the sun that nourishes life. He was never the banyan tree from which under life could not grow and flourish and become a banyan tree in its own right. For in this lay his greatness and his goodness.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may you and his sisters and their families find solace and strength in the knowledge that he was greatly loved.

With sincere and deep condolences to Mrs Mullick.

Those of us who worked with Suresh are a privileged lot. He made better human beings out of us, not just better advertising persons. As a fledgling account executive I was fortunate that he took me under his wing. I suppose that was one of the things so special about Suresh Mullick. He made all of us feel that he was behind us, with us, would never let us down... till he made us learn to stand on our own feet. Suresh was not the only mentor I had, but he was the only one who made an age difference disappear. Quite amazing how he could make differences melt away. Quite amazing how he could rib and tease yet never make you feel bad. I know that I will be forever indebted to "Mulk Sahb".

My wife Michelle and I, both of whom have had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Suresh in the late eighties, were deeply grieved to learn of his death. I was part of Ogilvy Bombay from 1986-92 and witnessed Suresh's creation of the Titan and National Integration campaigns. My wife Michelle also spent time at Ogilvy Bombay and knew Suresh as a professional and friend. As colleagues and agency juniors, we admired his unfailing courtesy, impeccable manners and tremendous style not just in who he was but in what he wrote. Suresh's penmanship was truly sublime and words written by him were a joy to behold. Both of us learned an enormous amount from him. As a friend he was affectionate and charming and totally genuine in his engagement of us and our lives. He once took a holiday with us in Goa where we enjoyed one of our most memorable and entertaining dinners with him. As work took me to another agency and us to another part of the world, our contact with Suresh unfortunately reduced to an annual card. Michelle and I would look forward to the mail at New Year for Suresh's greeting - always brilliantly different, always personal (written in his own hand) and always the highlight of our holiday cards. Alas there will be no card from Suresh this New Year... or ever again. We will miss Suresh and remember him often with the warmest sentiment and regard. An often promised trip to visit him in Delhi never came off - how deeply we regret that today.

Compare Suresh Mullick's public service campaigns with today's public service campaigns, and you realise that this is indeed the demise of an era. We pray that some of us can take up the 'sur' from where you left off, Suresh.

Suresh, you never died. I will not believe it. Because your pal Abdul once said, it takes more than physical hell to take away a man as kind yet had no time for bullshit. As potently creative yet too humble for this age. As sensitive as you were yet moved O&M into hi-octane TV presence. Jyotsana, Kailash Surendranath & Louise Banks, I'm sure will agree. So will over 3 generations of writers and film makers who owe your warm spirit far more than this digital salute. Oh my dear pencil-giant who refused to touch a pencil before your heart quivered with an intense brand-concept. Hope today's comp-screen starers learn from your guard book. Namaskar, my dear friend.

Ravi Gupta, Mukul Anand, Shunu Sen... All the great Gods of advertising are slowly dissappearing from the horizon. Suesh we will miss you...

I was sad to read on your site the obituary on Mullick! Mullique as we knew him would keep us entertained on saturday afternoons at the Bombay Gym watching cricket on the maidan. Will miss him. May his soul rest in peace.

I met Mr Mullick as an aspirant to the world of advertising, many years ago. His gentle & warm nature left a deep & unforgettable impact on me. May his soul rest in peace.

Every agency, every creative would want to have a guy like Suresh on their side... those who knew him knew how special he was ... those who didn't can see his work and discover that special touch he brought in every project he worked on. It would be a befitting tribute to Suresh if we could showcase some of his work on agencyfaqs!.

Wonderful, warm man... I feel sad that he went through what he did in the past one year. May his soul rest in peace.

Really sad news, for not too many people could brighten mundane afternoons as easily as Suresh could. I once asked Suresh for a ticket to a test match in Delhi - his reply was a classic - 'Don't go to the Kotla - cricket is not meant to be watched in Punjabi!' There were countless other hilarious one liners - especially during cricket discussions.

I met Suresh Mullick when I was in HTA Calcutta and he was holding fort at O&M. He was indeed a great guy, self effacing and a fabulous creative mind. May his soul rest in peace.

Words cannot heal a loss as great as this, but the memory of a man who lived his life well, may yet serve as a balm. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Mr. Mullick and my salutation to a great person.

Losing a person of this stature is a big jolt to the advertising industry. Now it's the job of new creative minds to cary on with the legacy he has set before us. May God give peace to this soul.

I met Suresh only once, at a workshop I attended and he conducted. In a the twelve-odd years I spent in the business no one made as much sense or left a deeper impression. He had brains and he had guts. They don't make too may like him. Here's to him continuing to light things up wherever he goes.
